| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Shirley Mae Jackson-Higgins, who passed |
| 4 | | away on May 24, 2014; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins was born in Bell City, |
| 6 | | Missouri on February 3, 1943 to Willie J. and Rosie Lee |
| 7 | | Jackson; she attended South Mast School and graduated from Bell |
| 8 | | City High School; she was a member of Missionary Baptist Church |
| 9 | | in Bell City; she attended Southeast Missouri State University |
| 10 | | in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and graduated from Triton College |
| 11 | | in River Grove; she also attended DePaul University; after |
| 12 | | relocating to Maywood, she was a member of First Baptist Church |
| 13 | | of Melrose Park; she married Albert on December 31, 1968; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins's work history is long |
| 15 | | and diverse beginning at Miles Square Medical Center of |
| 16 | | Chicago; after relocating to Maywood, she took the position of |
| 17 | | Account Administrator at Allied Van Lines; she also served as |
| 18 | | an assistant to the Illinois State Senate; later, she was |
| 19 | | employed by the Cook County Board of Commissioners; upon |
| 20 | | retirement, she served as Commissioner on the Maywood Housing |
| 21 | | Authority Board of Directors and was a member of The Way Back |
| 22 | | Inn Organization of Maywood Board of Directors; her most recent |
| 23 | | position was that of Director of the Maywood Urban |

| 1 | | Revitalization Corporation; and
|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins acquired numerous |
| 3 | | professional developmental certificates and accolades, |
| 4 | | including the Operation Uplift Maywood Hometown Achievement |
| 5 | | Award, the Rosa Parks Heritage Award, and membership in the |
| 6 | | Northeastern University Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society; |
| 7 | | and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins was preceded in death by |
| 9 | | her parents; 2 brothers, Freddie Lee and J.W.; and 5 sisters, |
| 10 | | Barbara Jean, Jessie B., Virginia, Ruthie Jean, and Deborah |
| 11 | | Ann; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Shirley Jackson-Higgins is survived by her loving |
| 13 | | husband, Albert; beloved sons, Talbert and Gerald; precious |
| 14 | | daughters, Angela Shirlene and Verna; beautiful grandchildren, |
| 15 | | Sydney Raymond and Taylor Gabrielle Rose; siblings, Willie Lee |
| 16 | | (Helen), Eddie Lee, Jerlean LeSure (Charles, deceased), |
| 17 | | Earnestine Pullen (Charles, deceased), Carl Lee (Loretta), |
| 18 | | Daniel Lee (Amelia), and Ceretha Brown (James, deceased); |
| 19 | | brother-in-law, J.W. Terry; and a host of nieces, nephews, |
| 20 | | other relatives, and friends; therefore, be it
