| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Julian "Jerry" Daggett of Chicago, who |
| 4 | | passed away on January 31, 2014; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Julian Daggett was born in Merriweather, South |
| 6 | | Carolina on January 1, 1926 to Julian and Lillie Mae Daggett; |
| 7 | | he attended Chicago Public Schools and Crane Junior College |
| 8 | | (now Malcolm X College); he served his country in the United |
| 9 | | States Army at the end of World War II and married Illinois |
| 10 | | Causey on January 19, 1946; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Julian Daggett returned home after his service and |
| 12 | | became part of the first class of African-Americans to graduate |
| 13 | | from the Chicago Police Academy; during the 1960s and 1970s, as |
| 14 | | Chicago was in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement, he took |
| 15 | | a strong stance against the discriminatory practices of the |
| 16 | | Chicago Police Department and became one of the original |
| 17 | | members of The Afro-American Patrolman's League; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Julian Daggett was preceded in death by his wife |
| 19 | | of 60 years, Illinois Causey; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Julian Daggett is survived by his children, Julian |
| 21 | | Daggett, Jr., Dorothy Sharon (Albert) Grant, Karen Walker, |
