2 | WHEREAS, Lung cancer kills 159,000 Americans every year, | ||||||
3 | more than any other form of cancer; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Smoking is the most common cause of lung cancer; | ||||||
5 | secondhand smoke exposure, radon, asbestos, and genetic | ||||||
6 | disorders have long been known to cause lung cancer; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, The World Health Organization's International | ||||||
8 | Agency for Research on Cancer recently added outdoor air | ||||||
9 | pollution and particulate matter to the growing list of air | ||||||
10 | pollutants known to cause lung cancer; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Although avoiding exposure to these carcinogens | ||||||
12 | is the best way to prevent lung cancer, people cannot always | ||||||
13 | avoid them because they are so widespread; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, The 5-year survival rate for lung cancer is only | ||||||
15 | 17%, among the lowest of all types of cancer; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer | ||||||
17 | greatly improves survival rates; however, most cases are not | ||||||
18 | diagnosed until their later stages; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, The lung cancer mortality rate for high-risk |

| |||||||
1 | populations can be lowered by up to 14% through early | ||||||
2 | detection, including low-dose CT screening; and | ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, It is estimated that 72,000 American women will | ||||||
4 | die of lung cancer in 2014, which accounts for 26% of all | ||||||
5 | female deaths due to cancer; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer in the | ||||||
7 | United States; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Every two-and-a-half minutes, someone in the | ||||||
9 | United States is told that he or she has lung cancer; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, In the last 36 years, the lung cancer death rate | ||||||
11 | has fallen 28% among men while increasing 98% among women; | ||||||
12 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
13 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
14 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we hereby designate | ||||||
15 | November as Lung Cancer Awareness Month in the State of | ||||||
16 | Illinois, and we encourage all residents to learn more about | ||||||
17 | the detection and treatment of lung cancer; and be it further
| ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
19 | presented to the American Lung Association.
