| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Roger Joslin of Bonita Springs, Florida, | ||||||
| 4 | who passed away on June 15, 2014; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Roger Joslin was born in Bloomington on June 21, | ||||||
| 6 | 1936 to Doris McLaflin and James Clifford Joslin; he graduated | ||||||
| 7 | from Bloomington High School in 1954, where he was a member of | ||||||
| 8 | the golf team; he graduated summa cum laude from Miami | ||||||
| 9 | University in Oxford, Ohio, where he was president of student | ||||||
| 10 | government, elected Phi Beta Kappa, and a member of the Sigma | ||||||
| 11 | Phi Epsilon fraternity; he received his law degree from the | ||||||
| 12 | University of Illinois Law School, where he was magna cum laude | ||||||
| 13 | and Order of the Coif; he married Stephany "Stevie" on June 14, | ||||||
| 14 | 1958; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Roger Joslin began his legal career with a law | ||||||
| 16 | firm in Peoria; he returned to Bloomington to be a controller | ||||||
| 17 | for Union Insurance Group; shortly thereafter, he embarked on a | ||||||
| 18 | 38-year career with State Farm Insurance, where he started as | ||||||
| 19 | assistant vice-president; ultimately, he became the chief | ||||||
| 20 | financial officer and vice-chairman of the board; he also led | ||||||
| 21 | significant portions of the company's civic leadership | ||||||
| 22 | efforts, including chairmanships of the Neighborhood Housing | ||||||
| 23 | Services and the Social Compact; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, After retirement, Roger Joslin remained active in | ||||||
| 2 | the business community; he served as a director of both Archer | ||||||
| 3 | Daniels Midland and Amlin, a London-based insurance company; he | ||||||
| 4 | also served as chairman of the board of the Western Avenue | ||||||
| 5 | Community Center, chairman of the board of the Advocate BroMenn | ||||||
| 6 | Medical Center, board member of the Bloomington Board of | ||||||
| 7 | Education for 11 years (including 2 terms as president), and as | ||||||
| 8 | a trustee for Illinois Wesleyan University; he was also the | ||||||
| 9 | chairman of the McLean County Republican Central Committee and | ||||||
| 10 | a 2-time delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1972 | ||||||
| 11 | and 1976; in 2013, he and his wife were honored by the McLean | ||||||
| 12 | County Museum of History as "History Makers" for their lifetime | ||||||
| 13 | of service to the community; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Roger Joslin enjoyed playing golf and tennis, | ||||||
| 15 | teaching tennis to his children, skiing, reading, and playing | ||||||
| 16 | duplicate bridge; he was a longtime member of the Second | ||||||
| 17 | Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder and chair of the board | ||||||
| 18 | of trustees; he was also an active member of the First | ||||||
| 19 | Presbyterian Church in Bonita Springs, Florida; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, Roger Joslin is survived by his wife, Stephany | ||||||
| 21 | "Stevie"; his daughter, Jill (Bill); his sons, Scott and Jim | ||||||
| 22 | (Wendy); and 5 grandchildren; therefore, be it
| ||||||

| 1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 3 | Roger Joslin, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, | ||||||
| 4 | friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
| ||||||
| 5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 6 | presented to the family of Roger Joslin as an expression of our | ||||||
| 7 | deepest sympathy.
