SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Thomas F. Sturr of Pentwater, Michigan,
4who passed away on August 23, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Thomas Sturr was born in Chicago on August 30,
61935 to Anthony and Estelle (nee Rimkus) Sturr; he graduated
7from St. Ignatius High School (now St. Ignatius College Prep)
8in 1953 and studied at John Carroll University; he later
9graduated from the University of Detroit (now University of
10Detroit Mercy) with a degree in architectural engineering; he
11married Dolores Kuchar in Berwyn on January 25, 1958, and they
12settled in Oak Park; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Thomas Sturr worked with architectural firms
14Shaw, Metz & Dolio and C.F. Murphy Associates and then became a
15partner with Perkins & Will; he then started his own firm,
16Thomas F. Sturr Architect, in Oak Park; he later formed the
17firm Sturr Young Associates; his projects included the
18restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple, with the
19consultation of Frank Lloyd Wright's son, Lloyd; his other
20projects included working on banks, commercial institutions,
21and the Oak Park Mall in the 1970s; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Thomas Sturr was a competitive

1Chicago-to-Mackinac sailboat racer since 1960; he discovered
2Pentwater, Michigan on a return trip from Mackinac Island and
3moved his family there in 1976; his architectural firm in
4Pentwater contributed to the harbor skyline with numerous
5projects, including St. Vincent Catholic Church; after
6retirement in June of 1998, he developed his love of watercolor
7painting while continuing to work on architectural projects;
8and
 
9    WHEREAS, Thomas Sturr was preceded in death by his parents;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Thomas Sturr is survived by his wife of 56 years,
12Dolores; his 5 sons, Mark, Kurt (Kathy), Tomas (Beth), Eric
13(Heather), and John (Madeline); his 8 grandchildren, Anthony,
14Andrea, Cameron, Kailey, Cooper, Brendan, Alec, and Connor; 2
15great-grandchildren, Dylan and Brady; his brother, Edward
16(Penny) Sturr; his brother-in-law, Chuck (Betsy) Kuchar; and
17many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20Thomas F. Sturr, and extend our sincere condolences to his
21family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
