| 1 | | AN ACT concerning education.
|
| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
| 4 | | Section 5. The Silent Reflection and Student Prayer Act is |
| 5 | | amended by changing Section 5 as follows:
|
| 6 | | (105 ILCS 20/5)
|
| 7 | | Sec. 5. Student prayer. In order that the right of every
|
| 8 | | student to the free exercise of religion is guaranteed within |
| 9 | | the public
schools and that each student has the freedom to not |
| 10 | | be subject to
pressure from the State either to engage in or to |
| 11 | | refrain from religious
observation on public school grounds,
|
| 12 | | students in the public schools may, during the school day, |
| 13 | | voluntarily engage in individually or collectively initiated, |
| 14 | | non-disruptive prayer or religious-based meetings, including |
| 15 | | without limitation prayer groups, B I B L E (Basic Instruction |
| 16 | | Before Leaving Earth) clubs, or "meet at the flagpole for |
| 17 | | prayer" days, that,
consistent with the
Free Exercise and |
| 18 | | Establishment Clauses of the United States and Illinois
|
| 19 | | Constitutions, are is not sponsored, promoted, or endorsed
in |
| 20 | | any manner by the school or any school employee.
