Amends the Charter Schools Law of the School Code. Requires a charter school to comply with all applicable absenteeism and truancy policies and requirements applicable to public schools under the laws of the State of Illinois. Sets forth how a charter school must define a truant, chronic or habitual truant, truant minor, and dropout. Effective immediately.

1 | | AN ACT concerning education.

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section |
5 | | 27A-5.5 as follows: |
6 | | (105 ILCS 5/27A-5.5 new) |
7 | | Sec. 27A-5.5. Charter school truancy. |
8 | | (a) A charter school shall comply with all applicable |
9 | | absenteeism and truancy policies and requirements applicable |
10 | | to public schools under the laws of the State of Illinois. |
11 | | (b) A charter school shall define a truant as a child who |
12 | | is subject to compulsory school attendance and who is absent |
13 | | without valid cause from such attendance for a school day or |
14 | | portion thereof. |
15 | | (c) A charter school shall define a chronic or habitual |
16 | | truant as a child who is subject to compulsory school |
17 | | attendance and who is absent without valid cause from such |
18 | | attendance for 5% or more of the previous 180 regular |
19 | | attendance days. |
20 | | (d) A charter school shall define a truant minor as a |
21 | | chronic truant to whom supportive services, including |
22 | | prevention, diagnostic, intervention, and remedial services, |
23 | | alternative programs, and other school and community resources |
