SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/27-4.5 new

    Amends the School Code. Requires every public elementary school that maintains grade 6 to include in its 6th grade curriculum a one-semester civics education course that includes the roles and responsibilities of federal, state, and local governments; the structures and functions of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government; and the meaning and significance of historic documents, such as the Articles of Confederation, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution of the United States.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
527-4.5 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/27-4.5 new)
7    Sec. 27-4.5. Civics education course. In addition to the
8instruction required to be provided under Section 27-3 of this
9Code, every public elementary school that maintains grade 6
10shall include in its 6th grade curriculum, beginning with the
112016-2017 school year, a one-semester civics education course
12that includes the roles and responsibilities of federal, state,
13and local governments; the structures and functions of the
14legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government;
15and the meaning and significance of historic documents, such as
16the Articles of Confederation, the Declaration of
17Independence, and the Constitution of the United States.
