Amends the School Code. Requires every public elementary school that maintains grade 6 to include in its 6th grade curriculum a one-semester civics education course that includes the roles and responsibilities of federal, state, and local governments; the structures and functions of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government; and the meaning and significance of historic documents, such as the Articles of Confederation, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution of the United States.

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section |
5 | | 27-4.5 as follows: |
6 | | (105 ILCS 5/27-4.5 new) |
7 | | Sec. 27-4.5. Civics education course. In addition to the |
8 | | instruction required to be provided under Section 27-3 of this |
9 | | Code, every public elementary school that maintains grade 6 |
10 | | shall include in its 6th grade curriculum, beginning with the |
11 | | 2016-2017 school year, a one-semester civics education course |
12 | | that includes the roles and responsibilities of federal, state, |
13 | | and local governments; the structures and functions of the |
14 | | legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government; |
15 | | and the meaning and significance of historic documents, such as |
16 | | the Articles of Confederation, the Declaration of |
17 | | Independence, and the Constitution of the United States.
