Amends the School Code. Subject to funds being made available from the State Board of Education from appropriations for this purpose, requires every public high school to include in its curriculum a separate civics course of study with the goal of helping young people acquire and learn to use the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will prepare them to be competent and responsible citizens throughout their lives. Sets forth the focuses of the course content.

2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section |
5 | | 27-4.5 as follows: |
6 | | (105 ILCS 5/27-4.5 new) |
7 | | Sec. 27-4.5. Civics course of study. Subject to funds being |
8 | | made available from the State Board of Education from |
9 | | appropriations for this purpose and in addition to the |
10 | | instruction required to be provided under Section 27-3 of this |
11 | | Code, every public high school shall include in its curriculum, |
12 | | beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, a separate civics |
13 | | course of study with the goal of helping young people acquire |
14 | | and learn to use the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will |
15 | | prepare them to be competent and responsible citizens |
16 | | throughout their lives. Course content shall focus on |
17 | | government institutions, the discussion of current and |
18 | | controversial issues, service learning, and simulations of the |
19 | | democratic process.
