Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that Illinois Route 66 license plates can be affixed to motorcycles having an engine over 150cc. Requires the Secretary of State to issue a version of the Route 66 license plates in a form appropriate for motorcycles.

|
2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
4 | | Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by changing |
5 | | Section 3-661 as follows:
|
6 | | (625 ILCS 5/3-661)
|
7 | | Sec. 3-661. Illinois Route 66 license plates.
|
8 | | (a) The Secretary, upon receipt of all applicable fees and |
9 | | applications
made in the form prescribed by the Secretary, may |
10 | | issue special registration
plates designated as
Illinois Route |
11 | | 66
license plates.
The special plates issued under this Section |
12 | | shall be affixed only to
passenger vehicles of the first |
13 | | division , motorcycles having an engine over 150cc, or motor |
14 | | vehicles of the second
division weighing not more than 8,000 |
15 | | pounds.
Plates issued under this Section shall expire according |
16 | | to the multi-year
procedure established by Section 3-414.1 of |
17 | | this Code.

18 | | (b) The design and color of the special plates shall be |
19 | | wholly within the
discretion of the Secretary.
The Secretary |
20 | | may, in his or her discretion, allow the plates to be issued as
|
21 | | vanity or personalized plates in accordance with Section |
22 | | 3-405.1 of this Code.
The plates are not required to designate |
23 | | "Land of Lincoln", as prescribed in
subsection (b) of Section |

1 | | 3-412 of this Code. The Secretary, in his or her
discretion, |
2 | | shall approve and prescribe stickers or decals as provided
|
3 | | under Section 3-412. The Secretary must issue a version of the |
4 | | special registration plates authorized under this Section in a |
5 | | form appropriate for motorcycles.
|
6 | | (c) An applicant for the special plate shall be charged a |
7 | | $40
fee for
original issuance in addition to the appropriate |
8 | | registration fee. Of this
fee, $25 shall be deposited into the |
9 | | Illinois
Route 66 Heritage Project
Fund and $15
shall be |
10 | | deposited into the Secretary of State Special License Plate |
11 | | Fund, to
be used by the Secretary to help defray the |
12 | | administrative processing costs.
|
13 | | For each registration renewal period, a $27 fee, in |
14 | | addition to the
appropriate registration fee, shall be charged. |
15 | | Of this fee, $25 shall be
deposited into the Illinois
Route 66 |
16 | | Heritage Project
Fund and $2 shall be deposited
into the |
17 | | Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund.

18 | | (d) The Illinois
Route 66 Heritage Project
Fund is created |
19 | | as a special fund in the
State treasury.
Subject to |
20 | | appropriation by the General Assembly and distribution by the
|
21 | | Secretary, Illinois Route 66 Heritage Project, Inc. shall use
|
22 | | all moneys in the Illinois
Route 66 Heritage Project
Fund
for |
23 | | the development of tourism, through education and |
24 | | interpretation,
preservation, and promotion of the former U.S. |
25 | | Route 66 in Illinois.
