| 2 | | WHEREAS, It is appropriate for us to remember the many |
| 3 | | sacrifices and contributions to the
cause of freedom made by |
| 4 | | the outstanding men and women who served in the United States |
| 5 | | Armed Forces; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Major Reid Nannen, son of Mary Ann and Dale |
| 7 | | Nannen, was a Hopedale native; he attended Olympia High School, |
| 8 | | where he was a two-year captain of the swim team, section
|
| 9 | | leader for the drum line, a member of Elite Eight baseball |
| 10 | | teams in 1999 and 2000, and was an
Illinois State Scholar; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, After graduating from Olympia, Major Nannen |
| 12 | | attended the University of Illinois, where he
was a member of |
| 13 | | the NROTC battalion and participated with the Marching Illini |
| 14 | | Drum Line and
NROTC Drill Team; and |
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Major Nannen enlisted in the U.S. Marines and was |
| 16 | | commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant
in May 2004; he attended The |
| 17 | | Basic School with Delta Company class 4-04, the Naval
Aviation |
| 18 | | Training with Marine Aviation Training Support Group 21 at |
| 19 | | Naval Air Station
Pensacola, the Naval Air Station Whiting |
| 20 | | Field, and Naval Air Station Meridian; he received his
Wings of |
| 21 | | Gold in February of 2007 and was selected to fly F/A-18 |
| 22 | | Hornets; and |
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Major Nannen moved to Lemoore, California for |
| 2 | | fleet replacement training with Strike Fighter
Squadron VF |
| 3 | | A-125 in May of 2007; he reported for duty with Marine Air |
| 4 | | Group-11 at Marine
Corps Air Station Miramar, and in June of |
| 5 | | 2008, he joined Marine Fighter Attack Squadron VMF A
(AW)-23 2 |
| 6 | | and was deployed from May to December of 2010 in support of |
| 7 | | Operation Enduring
Freedom 10.2 to Kandahar Airfield in |
| 8 | | Afghanistan; and |
| 9 | | WHEREAS, While with the Red Devils, Major Nannen served as |
| 10 | | Naval Air Training and
Operating Procedures Standardization, |
| 11 | | Ground Safety, Airframes, and Embark Officer, and
attended |
| 12 | | Tactical Air Control Party training in May of 2011; and |
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Major Nannen was then detached from the Red Devils |
| 14 | | and proceeded to Camp Pendleton,
California for duty as a |
| 15 | | forward air controller with 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance |
| 16 | | battalion; and |
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Major Nannen again deployed to Afghanistan from |
| 18 | | October of 2011 to May of 2012 with 1st
LAR in support of |
| 19 | | Operation Enduring Freedom 12.1 in the lower Helmand River |
| 20 | | Valley in
Afghanistan, supporting every company within 1st LAR |
| 21 | | and conducting the first company level
helicopter operations |
| 22 | | within the battle space; and |
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Major Nannen returned to Camp Pendleton and |
| 2 | | subsequently detached from the battalion for
refresher |
| 3 | | training at VMFAT-101; he was transferred to VMFA (AW)-242, |
| 4 | | based in Iwakuni,
Japan, where he served as the Assistant |
| 5 | | Operations Officer; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Major Nannen's awards and decorations include the |
| 7 | | NATO Medal, Sea Service
Deployment Ribbon, Global War on |
| 8 | | Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal,
National |
| 9 | | Defense Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Achievement Medal, |
| 10 | | Navy
Commendation Medal, and Air Medal; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, On March 1, 2014, Major Nannen, while |
| 12 | | participating in the elite Top Gun Pilot
training school, was |
| 13 | | killed when the FI A-18C Hornet he was piloting during a |
| 14 | | training exercise
crashed on the Fallen Range Training Complex, |
| 15 | | about 70 miles east of Naval Air Station Fallon,
Nevada; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Major Nannen left behind his parents, Dale and |
| 17 | | Mary Ann; his wife, Sarah, also a
Military Veteran; four young |
| 18 | | children, Peter, Curtis, Betsy, and Isla; and his sisters, |
| 19 | | Briana
Nannen and Bethany Miller; therefore, be it
|
| 20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 21 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE |
|

| 1 | | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate that the section of
|
| 2 | | Interstate 155 beginning at the Hopedale Exit on Illinois Route |
| 3 | | 122 and ending at the intersection
of Illinois Route 9 as the |
| 4 | | "Major Reid Nannen Memorial Highway"; and be it further |
| 5 | | RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation |
| 6 | | is requested to erect at suitable
locations, consistent with |
| 7 | | State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs |
| 8 | | giving
notice of the name of the "Major Reid Nannen Memorial |
| 9 | | Highway"; and be it further
|
| 10 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
|
| 11 | | presented to the family of Major Nannen, the Mayor of Hopedale, |
| 12 | | and the Secretary
of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
