HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm occurred 
3from August 2, 1990 to February 28, 1991 in the Middle East; 
4and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Ten Army, 8 Navy, and 5 Air Force National Guard 
6and Reserve units stationed in Illinois were deployed to the 
7Middle East in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm; 
8and
  
 
9    WHEREAS, Thousands of active duty military personnel from 
10Illinois, stationed all over the world, served in Operation 
11Desert Shield/Desert Storm in all branches of the United States 
12Armed Forces; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, Fourteen veterans from Illinois gave their lives 
14during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm; and

  
 
15    WHEREAS, On December 19, 2014, the National Desert Storm 
16War Memorial Committee received congressional and executive 
17approval to build a National Desert Storm War Memorial in 
18Washington, D.C., to honor the veterans from Illinois and the 
19nation who were killed in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm;

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
2NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
3recognize and show our support for the future National Desert 
4Storm War Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and be it further
  
 
5    RESOLVED, That we designate the date of February 28, 2015 
6as Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm Day in the State of 
7Illinois and urge the citizens of this State to honor those 
8Illinois veterans who gave their lives serving their country 
9during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
