HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize H.D. Darby on his
4accomplishments during the Civil Rights movement and for his
5role in fighting for voter rights; and
 
6    WHEREAS, In the early 1950s, H.D. Darby tried several times
7to register to vote, but was denied each time, being told that
8he did not "qualify"; and
 
9    WHEREAS, H.D. Darby filled a lawsuit against the State of
10Mississippi to be able to register to vote without having to
11interpret the state's constitution; and
 
12    WHEREAS, H.D. Darby was victorious in his lawsuit and that
13victory gave African-Americans the right to vote in Mississippi
14just as all other citizens could; and
 
15    WHEREAS, H.D. Darby's grandson, Christopher Blanks, who is
16a poet, author, and youth mentor and the founder of The Black
17Abolition Movement for the Mind, Inc., continues to carry on
18his family's tradition of community activism; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

1recognize H.D. Darby on his accomplishments during the Civil
2Rights movement and for his role in fighting for voter rights;
3and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of H.D. Darby as an expression of our
6esteem and respect.
