| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to recognize H.D. Darby on his |
| 4 | | accomplishments during the Civil Rights movement and for his |
| 5 | | role in fighting for voter rights; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, In the early 1950s, H.D. Darby tried several times |
| 7 | | to register to vote, but was denied each time, being told that |
| 8 | | he did not "qualify"; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, H.D. Darby filled a lawsuit against the State of |
| 10 | | Mississippi to be able to register to vote without having to |
| 11 | | interpret the state's constitution; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, H.D. Darby was victorious in his lawsuit and that |
| 13 | | victory gave African-Americans the right to vote in Mississippi |
| 14 | | just as all other citizens could; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, H.D. Darby's grandson, Christopher Blanks, who is |
| 16 | | a poet, author, and youth mentor and the founder of The Black |
| 17 | | Abolition Movement for the Mind, Inc., continues to carry on |
| 18 | | his family's tradition of community activism; therefore, be it

| 19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 20 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
