| 2 | | WHEREAS, State Representative Monique D. Davis and the |
| 3 | | members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to |
| 4 | | congratulate the Association for the Advancement of Creative |
| 5 | | Musicians (AACM) on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, 50 years ago, South Side jazz musicians found |
| 7 | | themselves in a musical landscape that was shifting towards |
| 8 | | rock'n'roll; clubs were closing and radio stations were going |
| 9 | | pop; Chicago musicians who had been employed 7-days-a-week |
| 10 | | found themselves with no jobs available at all; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Instead of just accepting the changing musical |
| 12 | | tastes, Chicago jazz musicians banded together and established |
| 13 | | the AACM; they invented original musical languages, created |
| 14 | | intriguing new instruments, and crafted novel ways of penning |
| 15 | | scores and otherwise defied long-standing presumptions of how |
| 16 | | music was supposed to be made; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Their work was steeped in the rituals of ancient |
| 18 | | Africa and certain traditions of early New Orleans music, and |
| 19 | | they managed to convey a vast sweep of black cultural history; |
| 20 | | the past 5 decades have produced recordings of a vast |
| 21 | | expressive and stylistic range, as well as influencing other |
| 22 | | jazz demographics; and
