HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Madeline Hoskins-Cumbey of Oswego for being named one of the top 2 youth volunteers in Illinois for 2015 in the Prudential Spirit of Community Award program; and

WHEREAS, The Prudential Spirit of Community Award, presented by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities; and

WHEREAS, Madeline Hoskins-Cumbey earned this award by giving generously of her time and energy to found a non-profit organization with her younger brother, "SMART2bfit", that seeks to engage young people in promoting healthy eating, accessible clean water, and other essentials for healthy living; Madeline Hoskins-Cumbey's family has a history of poor health, so she learned early on the fundamentals of a healthy lifestyle; wanting to share this knowledge with others, she started an after-school club that taught 30 kids about nutrition, hydration, and healthy habits; the members of the club then planted an organic garden at their school with a grant won by Madeline Hoskins-Cumbey; and

WHEREAS, Clubs and gardens continue to be a major part of Madeline Hoskins-Cumbey's "SMART2bfit" program; she and her brother organize clubs and camps to teach kids how to be healthy through various fun physical activities, such as cooking and gardening; they have sponsored 5 youth-run gardens that have raised thousands of pounds of fresh, organic produce for local food banks; they have also organized community walks that educate participants about the global water crisis while raising money to build wells and water tanks in Africa; and

WHEREAS, As a State Honoree, Madeline Hoskins-Cumbey received a $1,000 award, an engraved silver medallion, and a trip to Washington, D.C. on May 2-5, 2015 during a series of national recognition events; and

WHEREAS, The success of the State of Illinois, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of young people like Madeline Hoskins-Cumbey, who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate and honor Madeline Hoskins-Cumbey for being named one of the top 2 youth volunteers in Illinois for 2015 in the Prudential Spirit of Community Award program; recognize her outstanding record of volunteer service, peer leadership, and community spirit; and extend our best wishes for her continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Madeline Hoskins-Cumbey as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
