| 2 | | WHEREAS, It has come to the attention of the members of the |
| 3 | | Illinois House of Representatives that Pennoyer School in |
| 4 | | Norridge is celebrating the 175th anniversary of its founding; |
| 5 | | and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Built in the winter of 1839, Pennoyer School's |
| 7 | | first schoolhouse was a one-room building with a wood-burning |
| 8 | | stove; the school has since grown into a complex educational |
| 9 | | facility serving over 400 students; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, It was agreed that every adult in the area would |
| 11 | | contribute $5 for materials and would pitch in to help build |
| 12 | | the school on land donated by John Pennoyer, whom the school is |
| 13 | | named after; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, In 1893, the second and larger one-room school was |
| 15 | | built on the same site; a third school was built in the same |
| 16 | | location in 1920; in 1941, 2 new rooms were added to the |
| 17 | | building; in 1950, an additional 4 rooms and an all-purpose |
| 18 | | room were added; and
|
| 19 | | WHEREAS, In 1955, construction started on the school at the |
| 20 | | present Cumberland address; upon completion, the school |
| 21 | | building had 8 classrooms; and
|
