HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Stroke is a leading cause of death in the United States; hundreds of thousands of people suffer strokes annually; and

WHEREAS, Stroke is a brain attack that cuts off vital blood flow and oxygen to the brain; a stroke can happen to anyone at any time; and

WHEREAS, The National Stroke Association aims to reduce the impact and incidence of stroke through education and programs focused on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and support for those impacted by stroke, as well as their family and friends; and

WHEREAS, The month of May is National Stroke Awareness Month in the United States; the goal is to make people aware that they may be able to save a life of a person experiencing a stroke; and

WHEREAS, The National Stroke Awareness program places emphasis on programs to make people recognize symptoms of stroke and encourage them to act FAST if someone is suffering a stroke; and

WHEREAS, National Stroke Awareness Month is a timely reminder of stroke survivors and organizations that support stroke survivors through their lifelong journey of recovery; and

WHEREAS, The State of Illinois encourages efforts to promote education about symptoms of stroke and the efforts to better education the public regarding stroke; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate the month of May as Stroke Awareness and Prevention Month in the State of Illinois and recognize the work of advocacy by the National Stroke Association; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to Marylee Nunley, Executive Director of the Retreat and Refresh Stroke Camp, and the dedicated staff of the Stroke Camp for their work to improve the quality of life for stroke survivors, their families, and caregivers.
