| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are pleased to congratulate the members of NEW | ||||||
| 4 | Leadership Illinois on the occasion of its 10th anniversary in | ||||||
| 5 | 2015; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, NEW Leadership Illinois is a non-partisan, | ||||||
| 7 | week-long residential program for college women,
which | ||||||
| 8 | includes a policy theme and interaction with policy experts | ||||||
| 9 | from the University of Illinois and elsewhere, with the goal of | ||||||
| 10 | not only understanding one particular policy problem but also | ||||||
| 11 | gaining important skills in effectively using expert
| ||||||
| 12 | information to make a persuasive argument; it is designed to | ||||||
| 13 | increase the representation of women in all
elements of public | ||||||
| 14 | life, including elected office; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Students learn firsthand from the program what it | ||||||
| 16 | means to serve in public office and as
women leaders; the | ||||||
| 17 | program includes visits from current and former legislators, | ||||||
| 18 | other elected and appointed
officials, lobbyists, and | ||||||
| 19 | political campaign staff, who serve as mentors in the program;
| ||||||
| 20 | keynotes, panels, and roundtable discussions are held so that | ||||||
| 21 | students are able to see policy in action by visiting
| ||||||
| 22 | government offices during the week; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, NEW Leadership Illinois is a joint initiative of | ||||||
| 2 | the Institute of Government and Public Affairs at
the | ||||||
| 3 | University of Illinois and the Conference of Women Legislators | ||||||
| 4 | of the Illinois General Assembly; NEW Leadership Illinois has | ||||||
| 5 | been developed in partnership with the NEW Leadership | ||||||
| 6 | Development
Network established by the Center for American | ||||||
| 7 | Women and Politics, with a network that includes 14
states and | ||||||
| 8 | the District of Columbia; its mission is to promote greater | ||||||
| 9 | knowledge and
understanding about women's participation in | ||||||
| 10 | politics and government and to enhance women's
influence and | ||||||
| 11 | leadership in public life; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, NEW Leadership Illinois has helped Illinois rank | ||||||
| 13 | among the top 10 states for women political
leadership as it | ||||||
| 14 | has equipped over 200 young women since 2006 with the tools | ||||||
| 15 | needed to be successful
in later careers in public services; | ||||||
| 16 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 18 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 19 | congratulate the members of NEW Leadership Illinois on its 10th | ||||||
| 20 | anniversary and wish the organization and its members continued | ||||||
| 21 | success in the future; and be it further
| ||||||
| 22 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 23 | presented to the NEW Leadership Illinois as a
symbol of our | ||||||
