HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Cpl. Sara
4Medina at the age of 23; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina was one of 6 Marines killed while on a
6relief mission in Nepal the week of May 12, 2015; the
7helicopter was delivering rice and tarps to areas that were hit
8the hardest by the recent earthquakes; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina was serving as a combat photographer
10on the relief mission, documenting the work done by the Marines
11and the need for assistance in Nepal; before deploying to
12Nepal, she had photographed Marines in South Korea, the
13Philippines, Japan, Australia, and the United States; she was
14assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469 from
15Camp Pendleton, California; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina was a 2010 graduate of East Aurora
17High School, where she was a member of the Navy Junior Reserve
18Officers Training Corps; during high school, she also did
19clerical work in a mechanic shop, but did not hesitate to get
20in and change oil or fix mufflers; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina returned to her high school to talk to

1current students about the importance of getting a good
2education and about how, through her military service, she was
3seeing parts of the world she had only dreamed about in high
4school; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina joined the United States Marines in
6November of 2010; her decorations include the Navy and Marine
7Corps Achievement Medal, the Marine Good Conduct Medal, the
8National Defense Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service
9Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, and a Sea Service
10Deployment Ribbon; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina is survived by her parents and
12siblings, in addition to a fiance and many friends; she is
13described as a caring, sweet, and loving person who always
14thought of others; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Cpl. Medina died fulfilling her dream and serving
16her country; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
19mourn the passing of Cpl. Sara Medina, and extend our sincere
20condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
21her; and be it further
