| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The International Brotherhood of Electrical | ||||||
| 3 | Workers (IBEW) was founded in 1891; the organization represents | ||||||
| 4 | about 750,000 workers in the electrical industry in the United | ||||||
| 5 | States, Canada, Panama, and several Caribbean nations; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, IBEW International President Edwin D. "Ed" Hill | ||||||
| 7 | was born on August 11, 1937 in Beaver, Pennsylvania; in 1956, | ||||||
| 8 | he joined IBEW Local 712 in Beaver as a journeyman wireman and | ||||||
| 9 | quickly became an active member of the local; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, In 1961, Edwin Hill was elected to the political | ||||||
| 11 | action committee of IBEW Local 712 and took on greater | ||||||
| 12 | leadership roles; in 1964, he was appointed to the position of | ||||||
| 13 | Vice President and eventually became President of IBEW Local | ||||||
| 14 | 712; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, In 1976, Edwin Hill was appointed Vice President | ||||||
| 16 | of the Pennsylvania American Federation of Labor and Congress | ||||||
| 17 | of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO); during this time, he | ||||||
| 18 | married his wife, Rosemary, and the pair became the proud | ||||||
| 19 | parents of 3 children; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, In 1992, Edwin Hill was appointed Representative | ||||||
| 21 | of the IBEW Third District, representing Pennsylvania, New | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | York, New Jersey, and Delaware; he was appointed Vice President | ||||||
| 2 | of the IBEW Third District in 1994; and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, Due to his diligence, tenacity, and advocacy for | ||||||
| 4 | working men and women, Edwin Hill continued to receive greater | ||||||
| 5 | responsibilities within the IBEW; in 1997, he was appointed | ||||||
| 6 | International Secretary by President John "Jack" Barry; in | ||||||
| 7 | 1998, he was named IBEW's Secretary-Treasurer; and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, On January 29, 2001, following John "Jack" Barry's | ||||||
| 9 | retirement, Edwin Hill was appointed to serve as President of | ||||||
| 10 | IBEW International; the following September, he was elected by | ||||||
| 11 | a landslide vote and took office for his first 5-year term; he | ||||||
| 12 | served as IBEW International President for more than 14 years | ||||||
| 13 | and recently announced his plan to retire on June 1, 2015, | ||||||
| 14 | after nearly 60 years with IBEW; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 15 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 16 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 17 | congratulate Edwin D. Hill on his retirement and thank him for | ||||||
| 18 | his nearly 60 years of dedicated service as a member of the | ||||||
| 19 | International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; and be it | ||||||
| 20 | further
| ||||||
| 21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 22 | presented to Edwin Hill as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
