HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Evanston History Center has announced the
3launch of the "Year of Dawes", a yearlong series of programs,
4publications, and events held in honor of the 150th birthday of
5Charles Gates Dawes (1865-1951); and
 
6    WHEREAS, Charles Dawes was an accomplished politician,
7serving as Vice-President under Calvin Coolidge, a Nobel
8laureate, a philanthropist, a family man, and one of Evanston's
9most famous citizens; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The year of special programming is designed to
11re-examine Charles Dawes' career and biography and to explore
12the larger context of an early-20th century world - Dawes's
13"heyday" - that has all but vanished; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The "Year of Dawes" will include a variety of
15programing, a special exhibit focused on Charles Dawes' life
16and career, and 2 publications: a new edition of Dawes' 1921 'A
17Journal of the Great War' and a biography of Dawes by
18award-winning author, Annette Dunlap, to be published by
19Northwestern University Press; and
 
20    WHEREAS, A series of lectures will also be offered, which
21will include biographical talks about the Dawes' family in

1Evanston, an exploration of the landscape of the Dawes House,
2and talks on themes related to Charles Dawes' career and life,
3including finance, genealogy, adoption, and others; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The "Year of Dawes" officially kicks off on
5Charles Dawes' 150th birthday, August 27, 2015 at the Dawes
6House with a starlight party featuring live music, appetizers,
7cocktails, and a momentous announcement about the future of the
8Dawes House; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The "Year of Dawes" runs from August of 2015
10through August of 2016; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
13recognize and congratulate the Evanston History Center on the
14launch of its exciting programmatic year in commemoration of
15the 150th anniversary of the birth of Charles Gates Dawes; and
16be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the leadership of the Evanston History Center as
19an expression of our esteem and respect.
