2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of |
4 | | Mike "Tuna" McElroy, who passed away on July 17, 2015; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Mike McElroy served as mayor of the City of |
6 | | Decatur since 2009 and had been a member of the City Council |
7 | | since 2003; he was also vice president of the Skeff |
8 | | Distributing Company and a graduate of St. Teresa High School; |
9 | | and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Mike McElroy devoted much of his life to public |
11 | | service; he was a member of the St. Teresa Development Board of |
12 | | Directors, the YMCA Board of Directors, the SummerStart |
13 | | Festival Board of Directors, the Danville Convention and |
14 | | Tourism Board, and the Association of Beer Distributors of |
15 | | Illinois Board of Directors; he also held several leadership |
16 | | positions with the Jaycees; and |
17 | | WHEREAS, Mike McElroy was a member of Holy Family Catholic |
18 | | Church, where he joined Decatur residents in a show of |
19 | | solidarity against protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church |
20 | | in 2014; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, Mike McElroy is remembered for his friendliness, |
|

1 | | optimism, and passion for his community; he was a devoted |
2 | | public servant who cared deeply about the City of Decatur and |
3 | | took great pride in developments, such as downtown streetscape |
4 | | enhancements and the opening of a new police station; above |
5 | | all, he saw a bright future for the city and worked endlessly |
6 | | to move it forward; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Mike McElroy was preceded in death by his parents, |
8 | | Dick and Betty McElroy; his in-laws, Jim and Ginny Tuttle; and |
9 | | a sister, Anne McElroy; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Mike McElroy is survived by his wife of 35 years, |
11 | | Lynn; a son, Matt (Christina); 3 siblings, Pat, Tim (Leslie), |
12 | | and Ellen; a brother-in-law, Lee Tuttle; his nieces and |
13 | | nephews, Hilary and Colin Runion, Conor, Brennan, and Dixie |
14 | | McElroy, Byrnes Kenworth, Colleen (Jarid) Thompson; a |
15 | | great-niece, Remi; Hayden Athey; and Greg (Annie) and Maggie |
16 | | Tuttle; therefore, be it

17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
18 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
19 | | mourn the passing of Mike McElroy and extend our sincere |
20 | | condolences to his family and friends, the residents of |
21 | | Decatur, and all who knew him; and be it further
