HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of
4Mike "Tuna" McElroy, who passed away on July 17, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mike McElroy served as mayor of the City of
6Decatur since 2009 and had been a member of the City Council
7since 2003; he was also vice president of the Skeff
8Distributing Company and a graduate of St. Teresa High School;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Mike McElroy devoted much of his life to public
11service; he was a member of the St. Teresa Development Board of
12Directors, the YMCA Board of Directors, the SummerStart
13Festival Board of Directors, the Danville Convention and
14Tourism Board, and the Association of Beer Distributors of
15Illinois Board of Directors; he also held several leadership
16positions with the Jaycees; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Mike McElroy was a member of Holy Family Catholic
18Church, where he joined Decatur residents in a show of
19solidarity against protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church
20in 2014; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Mike McElroy is remembered for his friendliness,

1optimism, and passion for his community; he was a devoted
2public servant who cared deeply about the City of Decatur and
3took great pride in developments, such as downtown streetscape
4enhancements and the opening of a new police station; above
5all, he saw a bright future for the city and worked endlessly
6to move it forward; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Mike McElroy was preceded in death by his parents,
8Dick and Betty McElroy; his in-laws, Jim and Ginny Tuttle; and
9a sister, Anne McElroy; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Mike McElroy is survived by his wife of 35 years,
11Lynn; a son, Matt (Christina); 3 siblings, Pat, Tim (Leslie),
12and Ellen; a brother-in-law, Lee Tuttle; his nieces and
13nephews, Hilary and Colin Runion, Conor, Brennan, and Dixie
14McElroy, Byrnes Kenworth, Colleen (Jarid) Thompson; a
15great-niece, Remi; Hayden Athey; and Greg (Annie) and Maggie
16Tuttle; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
19mourn the passing of Mike McElroy and extend our sincere
20condolences to his family and friends, the residents of
21Decatur, and all who knew him; and be it further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
