| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to recognize the 40th anniversary of the |
| 4 | | Paul G. Stewart Center of the Peoples Consumer Co-Operative; |
| 5 | | and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, The Peoples Consumer Co-Operative (PCC) was |
| 7 | | organized in 1937 as
a cooperative buying club by a group of |
| 8 | | young, professional African-Americans; in 1937, it was very |
| 9 | | difficult for African-Americans to
purchase quality goods and |
| 10 | | services; the PCC provided the vehicle for African-Americans to |
| 11 | | purchase quality
goods in bulk in order to offer them to its |
| 12 | | members at discounted prices; the PCC later formed a credit |
| 13 | | union
that assisted its member in purchasing single-family |
| 14 | | homes and multi-family buildings that were
converted to housing |
| 15 | | cooperatives and condominiums; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The PCC got involved in government-assisted |
| 17 | | housing in the early 1970s; it sponsored
and developed 893 |
| 18 | | affordable housing units for senior and family households; the |
| 19 | | developments are
named after Paul G. Stewart, the second |
| 20 | | African-American certified public accountant
in the State of |
| 21 | | Illinois; and
|
| 22 | | WHEREAS, The Paul G. Stewart Center has nearly 1,200 |
