HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives are
3honored to recognize significant milestones in the lives of the
4people of this State; and
 
5    WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that former State
6Representative Paul Stone of Sullivan is celebrating his 100th
7birthday; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Rep. Stone was born in Newton on September 21,
91915 to Claude and Ruth Stone; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Rep. Stone attended one-room country schools
11until entering Sullivan Township High School, graduating in
121933; following graduation, he worked 2 years in Sullivan at
13the Brown Shoe company for 12 cents an hour, 10 hours a day, 6
14days a week; in 1940, he received a Bachelor of Science in
15General Business, making him the first in his family to earn a
16college degree; on June 1, 1942, he received his L.L.B./J.D.
17law degree from the University of Illinois; he was honored by
18the University of Illinois Law School as its February 1973
19Alumni of the Month; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Rep. Stone married Thelma Jones in Benton on
21February 5, 1939; he was admitted to the practice of law on

1September 14, 1942; he was recognized in 1992 by the Illinois
2Bar Association as a Senior Counsel and by the Moultrie County
3Bar Association for his 50 years of service as an attorney; he
4practiced law in Sullivan for 55 years until his retirement as
5senior partner of Stone and Stone in 1997; he has been
6recognized by numerous foundations and organizations and is a
7member of multiple professional and service organizations; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Rep. Stone was elected as a State Representative
9in 1950 to the 67th General Assembly from the 24th District; he
10was elected again in 1966 as State Representative to the 75th
11General Assembly for the 48th District and served through the
1279th General Assembly, in which he was elected Chairman of the
13Democratic Conference; he also served on the Board of Governors
14of State Colleges and Universities of Illinois for Eastern
15Illinois University, Illinois State University, Western
16Illinois University, and Northern Illinois University; he was a
17member of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the
18Universities Civil Service Merit System, the Board of the
19Western Illinois University Foundation, and the Board of the
20Illinois State University Foundation; in 1994, he was selected
21as a member of the Centennial 100 as one of 100 individuals who
22made a significant contribution to Eastern Illinois
23University's first 100 years; he was elected to the University
24of Illinois Board of Trustees in 1978 and served 2 terms as
25President of the Board; and

1    WHEREAS, Rep. Stone is the proud father of 4 children,
2Elaine Heavy, Paul Lee Stone, Michael L. Stone, and Marsha
3Daniel; he and his wife have 10 grandchildren, 13
4great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild;
5therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
8congratulate former State Representative Paul Stone on the
9occasion of his 100th birthday, and we extend to him our
10sincere best wishes for the future; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to Rep. Stone as an expression of our respect and
13esteem.
