| 2 | | WHEREAS, WINGS started in 1985 as a grass roots effort led |
| 3 | | by a handful of people to locate affordable housing in the |
| 4 | | north and northwest suburbs; during their search, they learned |
| 5 | | that women and children were a major component of the homeless |
| 6 | | and the reason for their homelessness was domestic violence; |
| 7 | | and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, With a strong belief in helping others and a |
| 9 | | commitment to making this a better world for those who were in |
| 10 | | need, a non-profit organization was incorporated under the name |
| 11 | | "Housing & Shelter Program" and set out to fund raise; as the |
| 12 | | years progressed, more women called for assistance and the name |
| 13 | | of the organization was changed to WINGS Program, Inc., an |
| 14 | | acronym for Women in Need Growing Stronger; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, The organization began acquiring houses and |
| 16 | | apartments so the homeless and abused women and children had a |
| 17 | | place to live; staff were hired to provide counseling, |
| 18 | | guidance, and support to the residents, and the phone never |
| 19 | | stopped ringing; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Over the past 30 years, WINGS has provided 10,000 |
| 21 | | women and children with more than 600,000 nights of shelter and |
| 22 | | is in the process of opening its second domestic violence safe |
