HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Attitudes towards the Confederate battle emblem
3have changed drastically over the years, with it being viewed
4by an ever-increasing number of people as a symbol of bigotry
5and oppression; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Recently, student leaders at the University of
7Mississippi voted to remove the Mississippi state flag, which
8contains the Confederate battle emblem, from campus until such
9time as the flag's design is changed to remove the Confederate
10battle emblem; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Although the vote reflects the desires of the
12University of Mississippi's students, it was a non-binding
13vote; the ultimate decision on whether to remove the
14Mississippi state flag from the campus resided with school
15administrators; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Several other public universities in Mississippi
17have already chosen to cease flying the state flag; and
 
18    WHEREAS, On October 26, 2015, University of Mississippi
19Interim Chancellor Morris Stocks ordered the flag lowered;
20therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
3congratulate the University of Mississippi student body on
4having their voice heard and being successful in obtaining the
5removal of the Mississippi state flag from campus; and be it
6further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to the University of Mississippi student body as an
9expression of our esteem and respect.
