2 | | WHEREAS, In 2015, an estimated 48,960 people will be |
3 | | diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States; 40,560 |
4 | | of these people will die from the disease; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers; |
6 | | it is currently the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the |
7 | | United States and is projected to become the second by 2020; |
8 | | and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is the only major cancer with a |
10 | | 5-year relative survival rate in the single digits at just 7%; |
11 | | and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, When symptoms of pancreatic cancer present |
13 | | themselves, it is generally late stage; 73% of pancreatic |
14 | | cancer patients die within the first year of their diagnosis, |
15 | | while 93% of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first 5 |
16 | | years; and |
17 | | WHEREAS, Approximately 1,640 deaths from pancreatic cancer |
18 | | will occur in Illinois in 2015; and

19 | | WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is the seventh most common cause |
20 | | of cancer-related death in men and women across the world; |
