| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Mother | ||||||
| 4 | Lorraine Jakes, who passed away on October 29, 2015; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Lorraine Jakes was born on September 1, 1934 in | ||||||
| 6 | Chicago; her parents were Hollis and Lovie Boggus; she married | ||||||
| 7 | Paul L. Jakes on June 16, 1957; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Lorraine Jakes attended Gladstone Elementary | ||||||
| 9 | School and McKinley High School; during her senior year of high | ||||||
| 10 | school, she took part in the student work study program, where | ||||||
| 11 | she enjoyed working for Carson Pirie Scott and Company in | ||||||
| 12 | Chicago; after high school, she attended Herzl Junior College; | ||||||
| 13 | in the late 1960s, she began studying early childhood | ||||||
| 14 | development at Loop College and Malcolm X College; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, After college, Lorraine Jakes found employment as | ||||||
| 16 | an assistant helper and was subsequently promoted to lead | ||||||
| 17 | teacher at Marillac House, Beacon House, the Jessie Thomas | ||||||
| 18 | Daycare Center, the Church of God Daycare, and the Montessori | ||||||
| 19 | Daycare; after working in early childhood development for | ||||||
| 20 | nearly 25 years, she and her husband went back to school and | ||||||
| 21 | completed course studies in Christian Education; she later | ||||||
| 22 | graduated with a Certificate of Studies in Christian Education | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | from the Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Lorraine Jakes gave her life to Jesus Christ at | ||||||
| 3 | the age of 12 years old at the Mount Union Baptist Church under | ||||||
| 4 | the pastorate of Rev. Dr. C.W. Jones; at the age of 13, her | ||||||
| 5 | music teacher selected her to play for the gospel chorus at the | ||||||
| 6 | Greater Union Missionary Baptist Church; during her time in the | ||||||
| 7 | choir, she played for church worship services, district | ||||||
| 8 | associations, the Westside Ministers Conference, and the | ||||||
| 9 | National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, where she | ||||||
| 10 | played before an audience of over 50,000; she also played for | ||||||
| 11 | the evening radio broadcasts of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church | ||||||
| 12 | and played for Mahalia Jackson and Elder James Lennox; and | ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Lorraine Jakes has served the New Tabernacle of | ||||||
| 14 | Faith Baptist Church as the Christian Education Director, | ||||||
| 15 | Missionary Society President, Anniversary Chair Person, Youth | ||||||
| 16 | Director, and Church Musician from 1967 until the time when she | ||||||
| 17 | was no longer able to attend church; and
| ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, Lorraine Jakes was preceded in death by her | ||||||
| 19 | parents; her husband, Pastor Paul L. Jakes, Sr.; and her | ||||||
| 20 | siblings, Lawrence Boggus and Joan Hutchins; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, Lorraine Jakes is survived by her sons, Pastor | ||||||
| 22 | Paul L. Jakes, Jr. and Pastor Martin L. (Betty) Jakes, Sr.; her | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | grandsons, Elijah R., Martin L., Jr., and Jonathan P. Jakes; | ||||||
| 2 | her sister, Eula Bundley; her many nieces, nephews, cousins, | ||||||
| 3 | other family members, and friends; her New Tabernacle of Faith | ||||||
| 4 | Baptist Church (Old Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church) | ||||||
| 5 | family; and her many spiritual sons and daughters; therefore, | ||||||
| 6 | be it

| 7 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 8 | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 9 | we, along with her family and friends, mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 10 | Mother Lorraine Jakes; and be it further
| ||||||
| 11 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 12 | presented to the family of Lorraine Jakes as an expression of | ||||||
| 13 | our sympathy.
