HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to congratulate Dr. Martin "Marty" 
4Hickman on the occasion of his retirement as Executive Director 
5of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA); and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, Dr. Hickman joined the IHSA as an Assistant 
7Executive Director in 1991; he was promoted to Associate 
8Executive Director in 1999 and Executive Director in 2001; and
  
 
9    WHEREAS, Dr. Hickman's tenure as Executive Director has 
10included unprecedented growth in participation
opportunities 
11for students; the IHSA added State series tournaments in 
12several sports and activities,
including boys bowling, 
13competitive cheerleading, competitive dance, journalism, and 
14boys and  girls
water polo; in addition, the IHSA became the 
15first State association in the country to offer bass fishing
in 
162011; it also added programs for athletes with disabilities in 
17several sports in 2012; and
  
 
18    WHEREAS, Dr. Hickman deserves credit for maintaining and 
19advancing the standing of the IHSA as one of the top state high 
20school associations in the country; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Dr. Hickman was born in Colorado; he was raised in

1New Berlin and attended Eastern Illinois University after

2graduating from New Berlin High School; he began his career in 
3education as a teacher and coach at
Girard High School; he 
4later served as the principal of Bluffs Jr.-Sr. High School, 
5Westmer Secondary
School, and Monmouth High School where he 
6remained until joining the
IHSA staff; he also went on to earn 
7a master's degree from the University of Illinois at 
8Springfield and his
doctorate in education from the University 
9of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and
  
 
  
10    WHEREAS, Dr. Hickman's retirement will be official on 
11January 15, 2016; therefore, be it
  
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
13NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
14congratulate Dr. Martin "Marty" Hickman on his retirement as 
15Executive Director of the Illinois High School Association; and 
16be it further
  
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
18presented to Dr. Hickman as an expression of our esteem and 
19respect.
