HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to congratulate the residents of Pope 
4County on the 200th anniversary of the county's founding; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Pope County was established on January 10, 1816, 
6and formed from portions of Gallatin and Johnson counties; it 
7received its name from Nathaniel Pope, then Secretary of the 
8Illinois Territory; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Pope County shares in a portion of the Shawnee 
10National Forest, providing residents and visitors with lakes, 
11creeks, rock formations, and caves; and
  
 
12    WHEREAS, Notable residents from Pope County include 
13American Civil War General James L. Alcorn, Military Governor 
14of South Korea, preceding the Korean War John R. Hodge, and 
15American Civil War General Green B. Raum; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Pope County host many yearly events, including the 
17River-to-River Relay, the 9-day Trail Ride, the Deer Festival, 
18and the Christmas House Tour; and
  
 

  
19    WHEREAS, Residents of Pope County began celebrating their 
20county's bicentennial on January 10, 2016 and will hold

1celebratory events throughout the year; therefore, be it
  
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
3NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
4congratulate the residents of Pope County on the 200th 
5anniversary of the county's founding, and we wish them many 
6more wonderful years.
