| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate John William Straub on the |
| 4 | | occasion of his 90th birthday on April 14, 2016; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, John Straub was born at home in Park Ridge on |
| 6 | | April 14, 1926, the year before the first talking motion |
| 7 | | picture; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, John Straub survived a bout of pneumonia in fourth |
| 9 | | grade at a time when there were no antibiotics; he received his |
| 10 | | permit to drive at age 14 and lived by himself for 2 years with |
| 11 | | a housekeeper in Winnetka while his father served as Food |
| 12 | | Rationing Director for the United States under President |
| 13 | | Franklin Roosevelt; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, John Straub graduated from North Shore Country Day |
| 15 | | High School in June of 1944; he then enlisted in the United |
| 16 | | States Army Air Corps, where he ensured that the Army's Boca |
| 17 | | Raton Photography Lab had all the supplies it needed, which |
| 18 | | helped to win World War II; he subsequently graduated from Yale |
| 19 | | University in 1949; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, In 1951, John Straub met Jane Easter, who worked |
| 21 | | in the Marshall Field's fashion office; he married her on a hot |
|

| 1 | | day in Peru, Indiana on June 14, 1952; and
|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, After working at the First National Bank of |
| 3 | | Chicago, John Straub joined his father at W.F. Straub & |
| 4 | | Company, a food manufacturer, in November of 1952, where he |
| 5 | | successfully sold honey, patented dried honey, and molasses |
| 6 | | under the SlowAsMolasses label; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, On August 15, 1955, John Straub and his wife had |
| 8 | | their first daughter, Joan Easter Straub, who lived her first |
| 9 | | year under the piano due to lack of space in their Chicago |
| 10 | | apartment; they had their second daughter, Jennifer Straub, on |
| 11 | | September 23, 1959; the couple lived at 528 Madison Avenue in |
| 12 | | Glencoe from 1956 to 1965, then moved to 771 Sheridan Road in |
| 13 | | Winnetka; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, John Straub has traveled extensively and has |
| 15 | | danced with Ginger Rogers; he worked as a director at William |
| 16 | | Blair from 1965 until his retirement in 1996; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, John Straub has been actively involved in |
| 18 | | volunteer work with the Wieboldt Foundation, the Executive |
| 19 | | Services Corporation, Planned Parenthood, the Juvenile |
| 20 | | Protective Association, and the Winnetka Caucus; he has also |
| 21 | | served as an election judge since 1990; and
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Following the passing of his first wife, John |
| 2 | | Straub dated Shirley Gately, whom he married on July 2, 2008; |
| 3 | | the couple holds the record as the oldest couple to be married |
| 4 | | in the history of Christ Church; and |
| 5 | | WHEREAS, John Straub is an outstanding father to his 2 |
| 6 | | daughters and a loving grandfather to Katherine, Jacqueline, |
| 7 | | John, Rebecca, and James; therefore, be it
|
| 8 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 9 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
| 10 | | congratulate and honor John William Straub on the occasion of |
| 11 | | his 90th birthday and wish him all the best in his future |
| 12 | | endeavors; and be it further

| 13 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 14 | | presented to John Straub as an expression of our |
| 15 | | congratulations.
