HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate the members of the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association on the occasion of the organization's 125th anniversary on March 16, 2016; and

WHEREAS, The Nineteenth Century Club was established in 1891 by a group of visionary women who believed that education, charitable activities, and civic involvement were vital elements in a thriving community; the spirit of the founders continues today in the work of the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association through benevolence grants, scholarships, and public programming in five areas - music, art, literature, science, and social sciences; and

WHEREAS, Since 1891, the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association has focused on strengthening the community through learning; the organization's diverse membership builds mutually beneficial partnerships, practices and promotes charitable giving, and advances intellectual stimulation, learning, volunteerism, and fellowship; and

WHEREAS, Over the years, the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association has provided support as well as thousands of donations to community organizations and not-for-profits through direct community outreach grant funding and the reduced or free use of its landmark building; the organization has also funded over 1,000 four-year college scholarships to area students, sewn and knitted more than 56,000 garments for infants, children, soldiers, and those in need from natural disasters, offered over 6,700 enriching and educational programs in art, music, social science, science, and literature, and has been a trusted community anchor that has touched countless lives in the past 125 years; and

WHEREAS, The Nineteenth Century Charitable Association is the sole owner of the organization's building at 178 Forest Avenue in Oak Park, which is used to support and enable the group's charitable and educational endeavors; various charitable and cultural activities are supported by its over 200 members, volunteers, and donors, as well as events held in this Oak Park Landmark; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the members of the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association on the occasion of the organization's 125th anniversary and wish them continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Nineteenth Century Charitable Association as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
