| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Albert |
| 4 | | McCoy, who passed away on April 26, 2016; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Albert McCoy was born on June 25, 1926 in Aurora, |
| 6 | | where he was a lifelong resident; he was a 1944 Marmion Academy |
| 7 | | alum; he later enlisted in the United States Navy and earned |
| 8 | | five Battle Stars; he then attended the former Aurora College |
| 9 | | and the University of Montana on a football scholarship; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Albert McCoy served as the Mayor of Aurora from |
| 11 | | 1965 to 1977; during his tenure, he was instrumental in the |
| 12 | | passage of a fair housing ordinance, approved at a time when |
| 13 | | civil unrest brewed following the assassination of Dr. Martin |
| 14 | | Luther King Jr. and making Aurora the second city in the State |
| 15 | | to pass such a law; in order to improve the Aurora Police |
| 16 | | Department, he brought in legal counsel that specialized in the |
| 17 | | area and required testing for the police chief candidates; he |
| 18 | | organized the Aurora Civic Authority, the group that led the |
| 19 | | charge to save the Paramount Theatre, a historic landmark in |
| 20 | | downtown Aurora; he led the move to annex 6,800 acres to the |
| 21 | | city, the second-largest land addition to a municipality in |
| 22 | | Illinois history which is now the site of the Fox Valley Mall |
| 23 | | and the Fox Valley Villages in DuPage County; and
