2 | | WHEREAS, Each year approximately 2 million women are |
3 | | assaulted by male partners and an
estimated 3.3 million |
4 | | children witness domestic abuse; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Domestic abuse has been linked to a wide range of |
6 | | societal problems for people coming from violent homes |
7 | | including a majority of violent criminals and homeless people; |
8 | | a large
percentage of alcoholics and drug addicts; many |
9 | | juvenile delinquents; and a majority of welfare
recipients; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, The DuPage County Health Department identified |
11 | | domestic abuse, and child
abuse/neglect as 2 of the top 5 major |
12 | | public health problems and DuPage crime data
indicates that |
13 | | domestic abuse is the county's second most prevalent offense; |
14 | | and |
15 | | WHEREAS, Family Shelter Service was founded in 1976 by |
16 | | DuPage families concerned about
women and children made |
17 | | homeless by the violence in their lives; and |
18 | | WHEREAS, During its 40-year tenure, Family Shelter Service |
19 | | has offered a safe haven for
thousands of adults and children |
20 | | trapped by the violence in their homes; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Family Shelter Service educates communities on |
2 | | domestic abuse and how to
prevent it; it operates a 24-hour |
3 | | hotline, provides shelter for those leaving abusive |
4 | | relationships, and
runs a kids program to educate and counsel |
5 | | children about domestic abuse; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Family Shelter Service counselors and case |
7 | | workers have helped countless adults
and children heal from the |
8 | | devastating effects of domestic abuse and move on to productive |
9 | | lives
and safer futures; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Family Shelter Service has partnered with the |
11 | | DuPage County Judicial System to
help traumatized clients |
12 | | navigate the complexities of the legal system when obtaining |
13 | | Orders of
Protection and other services; therefore, be it
|
14 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
15 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
16 | | appreciate and applaud the
essential value of this organization |
17 | | and its vital contribution in creating safer communities for |
18 | | all; and be it further |
19 | | RESOLVED, That we recognize the 40th anniversary of Family |
20 | | Shelter Service
in April of 2016; and be it further

21 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
