HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to congratulate Brother James Gaffney, 
4FSC, on the occasion of his retirement as President of Lewis 
5University on June 30, 2016; and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, Brother James became the 9th President of Lewis 
7University in 1988; and
  
 
8    WHEREAS, Lewis University has achieved incredible 
9successes through Brother James' leadership; enrollment has 
10grown to more than 6,700
students, dozens of programs have been 
11added, and the Romeoville campus has been revitalized; Lewis 
12University was  selected as the highest ranked Catholic 
13university in Illinois by the 2016 CollegeChoice.net rankings 
14of the 75 Best Catholic Colleges and Universities; and
  
 
15    WHEREAS, During Brother James' tenure, academic offerings 
16have expanded to include 82 undergraduate programs, 34 graduate 
17degrees, and doctoral programs in education and
nursing; U.S. 
18News & World Report, The Princeton Review, Colleges of 
19Distinction, and Great Value Colleges have recognized Lewis 
20University's commitment
to student success through quality 
21academic programs and facilities, outstanding faculty, 
22affordable education, and a collaborative atmosphere; and

1    WHEREAS, Before becoming President, Brother James served 
2on the University's Board of Trustees for 11 years, including 
310 as Board Chair; he has been a  faculty member in Theology and 
4has  extensive administrative experience as Provincial of the 
5Christian Brothers of the Midwest; and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, Brother James is an alumnus of St. Mary's 
7University of Minnesota; he holds master's degrees from St. 
8Mary's and Manhattan College (N.Y.), and a Doctorate in

9Pastoral Theology from the University of St. Mary of the Lake 
10(IL.); therefore, be it
  
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
12NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
13congratulate Brother James Gaffney, FSC, on his retirement as 
14President of Lewis University and we wish him the best in all 
15his future endeavors; and be it further
  
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
17presented to Brother James as an expression of our esteem and 
18respect.
