| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Margie Jo |
| 4 | | Harmon of Herrin, who passed away on April 20, 2016; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Margie Harmon was born in Greenville, Texas to |
| 6 | | Robert Horace and Nina Jo (Turner) Moore on April 10, 1926; she |
| 7 | | graduated from Central High School in Muskogee, Oklahoma in |
| 8 | | 1943 and enrolled at Oklahoma State University; she married |
| 9 | | Bill Harmon in a civil ceremony in Perry, Oklahoma on June 16, |
| 10 | | 1949, and again at St. Andrew Episcopal Church in Stillwater, |
| 11 | | Oklahoma on August 13, 1949; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Margie Harmon and her family moved to Herrin in |
| 13 | | August of 1968; she landed her first teaching job at Lincoln |
| 14 | | School in Herrin; she taught third grade in Herrin schools for |
| 15 | | 29 years; she was instrumental in the establishment of an |
| 16 | | accelerated reader program in Herrin elementary schools; she |
| 17 | | continued to work with the reading program after retiring from |
| 18 | | teaching in 1998; she received an outstanding service award |
| 19 | | from the Illinois Educational Association for her work with the |
| 20 | | Herrin IEA affiliate and for serving on the teacher union's |
| 21 | | board of directors; and |
| 22 | | WHEREAS, Margie Harmon was elected to the Herrin Community |

| 1 | | Unit 4 School Board in 1989 for the first of three terms; she |
| 2 | | was an advocate for teacher's rights and needs and for fairness |
| 3 | | for all sides in contract negotiations; and |
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Margie Harmon and her husband were the owners of a |
| 5 | | successful flower and gift shop and garden center business, |
| 6 | | Nancy's Flowers and Gifts (now Les Marie Florist) for 15 years; |
| 7 | | and |
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Margie Harmon was an avid reader and a member of |
| 9 | | The Page Turners club; she was a charter member of the Friends |
| 10 | | of Herrin City Library, serving on the group's board of |
| 11 | | directors; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Margie Harmon was the Chairperson of the Our Lady |
| 13 | | of Mount Carmel's Sister Parish Project in Mulajje, Uganda, |
| 14 | | raising more than $112,500 to provide lunch at school for |
| 15 | | approximately 450 children each day; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Margie Harmon is survived by her husband, Bill; |
| 17 | | her children, Catherine Louise Fleck, Ruth Ellen Harmon, |
| 18 | | Margaret Ann (Dr. James) Petersen, Melinda Gail (Bill Cronin) |
| 19 | | Harmon, Mary Elizabeth Lockhart, and Matthew Preston Harmon; |
| 20 | | her grandchildren, Simon (Sharon) Stotler, Emily (Dave |
| 21 | | Cipriani) Fleck, Isabelle Petersen, Anna Lockhart, Joseph |
| 22 | | Petersen, August Petersen, and William Kellogg; and her |
|

| 1 | | great-grandsons, Marcus and Jacob Stotler, and Julian |
| 2 | | Cipriani; therefore, be it

| 3 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 4 | | NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
| 5 | | mourn the passing of Margie Jo Harmon, and extend our sincere |
| 6 | | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved |
| 7 | | her; and be it further

| 8 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 9 | | presented to the family of Margie Harmon as an expression of |
| 10 | | our deepest sympathy.
