HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed
3Proclamation 5187, creating "National Correctional Officers'
4Week"; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Each year, the first full week in May is
6recognized as National Correctional Officers and Employees
7Week, commemorating the contributions of correctional officers
8and personnel who work in jails, prisons, and community
9corrections across the country; and
 
10    WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers' Week provides a
11platform allowing the community to recognize correctional
12officers, both past and present, for the critical and difficult
13service they provide to the communities they serve; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The correctional system is intended to protect the
15public by separating violent offenders from the community,
16deterring others from offending, and rehabilitating offenders
17for reintegration into the community upon release; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Preparing offenders for their return to their
19communities is critical to protecting public safety; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Working in correctional facilities is demanding

1as personnel must maintain a constant state of heightened
2vigilance and adhere to strict security protocols; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Corrections staff must perform their duties
4within harsh physical environments and with the threat of
5repeated exposure to violent events; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
8recognize the first full week in May as being National
9Correctional Officers' Week to honor the efforts of
10correctional officers across the State; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the Illinois Correctional Association as a symbol
13of our respect and esteem.
