| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to recognize the 70th anniversary of |
| 4 | | Argonne National Laboratory; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Argonne's beginnings can be traced to Enrico Fermi |
| 6 | | and the attempt to create the world's first self-sustaining |
| 7 | | nuclear reaction - the Manhattan Project; because the |
| 8 | | experiments were deemed too dangerous to conduct in a major |
| 9 | | city, the operations were moved to a spot in nearby Palos Hills |
| 10 | | and renamed "Argonne" after the surrounding forest; and |
| 11 | | WHEREAS, The laboratory was chartered as Argonne National |
| 12 | | Laboratory on July 1, 1946; at the request of the United States |
| 13 | | Atomic Energy Commission, it began developing nuclear reactors |
| 14 | | for the nation's peaceful nuclear energy program; in the late |
| 15 | | 1940s and early 1950s, the laboratory moved to a larger |
| 16 | | location in Lemont and established a remote location in Idaho, |
| 17 | | called "Argonne-West", to conduct further nuclear research; |
| 18 | | and

| 19 | | WHEREAS, Argonne's workforce consists of 3,298 employees, |
| 20 | | 1,623 scientists and engineers, 315 postdoctoral scholars, 457 |
| 21 | | graduate and undergraduate students, 248 joint faculty, and |
| 22 | | over 7,186 facility users; and
