HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, All-terrain vehicles are used by many Americans
3for recreation and work-related activities; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Many national forests and recreational areas,
5including Hiawatha National Forest, Huron-Manistee National
6Forest, and Ottawa National Forest in Michigan, Land Between
7the Lakes in Kentucky, Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee,
8Wayne National Forest in Ohio, and Allegheny National Forest in
9Pennsylvania, allow the use of all-terrain vehicles on forest
10trails; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Currently, the use of all-terrain vehicles in
12Shawnee National Forest is only available through a disability
13permit program; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Shawnee National Forest features numerous areas
15for riding horses, including the Burden Fall Wilderness, the
16Camp Cadiz Campground, One Horse Gap Lake, the Bald Knob Cross
17Trail, the Johnson Creek Recreation Area, the Kinkaid Lake
18Trail System, the Little Grand Canyon, and the Panther Den
19Wilderness, but many members of the public have expressed their
20wish to have greater opportunities for horse riding within
21Shawnee National Forest; and

1    WHEREAS, The creation of trails for the general use of
2all-terrain vehicles in Shawnee National Forest and the
3expansion of horse trails in the national forest would generate
4large amounts of State revenue and prove to be a boon for
5tourism for Shawnee National Forest, southern Illinois, and the
6State at large; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9urge the United States Forest Service to allow the use of
10all-terrain vehicles in Shawnee National Forest, expand the
11existing system of horse trails, and explore additional ways to
12allow greater recreational use of Shawnee National Forest for
13the recreational and economic benefit of the citizens of the
14State of Illinois; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16delivered to Thomas L. Tidwell, Chief of the United States
17Forest Service.
