HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to honor  Derrick Nathan Burgess for his 
4many years of public service on behalf of the citizens of Sauk 
5Village; and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, Derrick Burgess moved to Sauk Village in 1982; he 
7and his loving wife, Juanita, have been married for over 42 
8years and have four children, Derrick, Arleta, Steven, and 
9Erika; and
  
 
10    WHEREAS, Derrick Burgess has been involved in his community 
11and hometown of Sauk Village in many capacities; he served as 
12Vice President of the St. James Catholic School Board of 
13Trustees and as Chairman of the Finance Committee for the 
14School in Sauk Village; he was a founding member of the Deer 
15Creek Homeowners Association and helped form the Men's Club in 
16Sauk Village; he also served the children of Sauk Village by 
17serving as a volunteer for the Sauk Village Parks and 
18Recreation Committee and served as a Commissioner for the Sauk 
19Village Zoning Board of Appeals; and
  
 
20    WHEREAS, Derrick Burgess was appointed to the unexpired 
21term of Sauk Village Village Trustee Rita Kueny by former Mayor 
22Roger G. Peckham on June 13, 2006; his appointment made him the

1first African-American man to serve as a Village Trustee in the 
249-year history of the Village; he was re-elected to his 
3position in 2007, 2011, and 2015; he was re-elected to a 
4historic third consecutive term as Village Trustee in April of 
52015, a feat which has only been matched by a select few in 
6Sauk Village; and
  
 
7    WHEREAS, From 2006 to 2009, Derrick Burgess served as 
8chairman of the Sauk Village Parks and Recreation Committee, 
9where the Village enjoyed many time-honored traditions and 
10programs for the youth of Sauk Village; he served as Treasurer 
11of the Sauk Village Fiftieth Anniversary Committee in 2007; he 
12served as Chairman of the Sauk Village Economic Development 
13Committee from 2009 to 2013, during which time the Village was 
14successful in securing Winpak at the Sauk Village 
15LogistiCenter; he served as Chairman of the first Sauk Village 
16Intergovernmental Relations Committee from 2013 to 2015, 
17leading off a new venture to bring about intergovernmental 
18cooperation; he also began a monthly Town Hall Meeting for the 
19residents of the Village in June of 2013; and
  
 
20    WHEREAS, Derrick Burgess will be honored with a celebration 
21of his many achievements at an event at the Trustee Burgess 
22Town Hall Meeting on June 15, 2016; therefore, be it
  
 
23    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE

1NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
2honor Derrick Nathan Burgess for his many years of public 
3service on behalf of the citizens of Sauk Village and wish him 
4continued success and happiness in the future; and be it 
5further
  
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
7presented to Derrick Burgess as a symbol of our esteem and 
8respect.
