HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The Members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives recognize that township
government is the 
4oldest existing unit of government in the United States, first 
5established in 1636 in
Providence, Rhode Island, and first 
6established in Illinois when  Ela Township was formed in 
7Southwest Lake County in 1850; and
  
 
8    WHEREAS, Eighty-Five of the 102 counties in Illinois 
9operate under the township form of government, and
the 1,431 
10townships serve more than eight million citizens; and
  
 
11    WHEREAS, Ela Township serves over 40,000 residents in Lake 
12County; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, Ela Township has provided vital programs and 
14services to its residents since its
founding in 1850; today, 
15those services include senior, youth, disabled, general 
16assistance,
cemetery maintenance, park maintenance, bussing, 
17assessment, road maintenance, and
counseling; and
  
 
  
18    WHEREAS, Ela Township has been recognized on several 
19occasions for service to the community; most
recently, 
20receiving the Association of Illinois Senior Centers highest 
21honor, the "Mind, Body and
Spirit" award, for its "55 Plus"

1program; therefore, be it
  
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
3NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
4designate September 21,
2016 as Township Day in Ela Township, 
5and we thank Ela Township for its service to its residents; and 
6be it further
  
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
8presented to Ela Township as a symbol of our respect and 
9esteem.
