| 2 | | WHEREAS, The Members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives recognize that township
government is the |
| 4 | | oldest existing unit of government in the United States, first |
| 5 | | established in 1636 in
Providence, Rhode Island, and first |
| 6 | | established in Illinois when Ela Township was formed in |
| 7 | | Southwest Lake County in 1850; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Eighty-Five of the 102 counties in Illinois |
| 9 | | operate under the township form of government, and
the 1,431 |
| 10 | | townships serve more than eight million citizens; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Ela Township serves over 40,000 residents in Lake |
| 12 | | County; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Ela Township has provided vital programs and |
| 14 | | services to its residents since its
founding in 1850; today, |
| 15 | | those services include senior, youth, disabled, general |
| 16 | | assistance,
cemetery maintenance, park maintenance, bussing, |
| 17 | | assessment, road maintenance, and
counseling; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Ela Township has been recognized on several |
| 19 | | occasions for service to the community; most
recently, |
| 20 | | receiving the Association of Illinois Senior Centers highest |
| 21 | | honor, the "Mind, Body and
Spirit" award, for its "55 Plus" |
