HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives wish to congratulate  the Powell family on the 
4occasion of being named the 2016 Illinois Farm Family of the 
5Year at the Salute to Agriculture at the University of 
6Illinois; and
  
 
7    WHEREAS, When the United States entered World War II after 
8the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, millions of young men 
9rushed to enlist in the various branches of the military; the 
10seven sons of George and Addie Powell, Fred, Adrian, Arthur, 
11Earl, Everett, George, and Max, were no exception; despite the 
12fact that the sons of farmers could be exempted from service to 
13stay home and continue producing the crops needed to feed the 
14nation and its military, the Powell brothers answered the call 
15of duty and were sent to fight; all of them survived the war 
16and returned home at various times to the family farm; and
  
 
17    WHEREAS, The Powell family has lived and farmed in the 
18Hillview area for five generations; Jimmy Powell, a 
19fifth-generation Powell, serves as manager of the Hartwell 
20Ranch Inc. elevator in Hillview; his father, Jim Powell, served 
21as a pilot in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1972 and was 
22Jimmy Powell's predecessor as manager of the Hartwell elevator;

1    WHEREAS, A portion of U.S. 67 was renamed the Powell 
2Brothers Memorial Highway by the Illinois General Assembly in 
32015 in honor of their courage in war and their contributions 
4to the State of Illinois; and

  
 
5    WHEREAS, The members of the  Powell family serve as models 
6of hard work, integrity, and dedication for the people of the 
7State of Illinois; therefore, be it
  
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
9NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
10congratulate the Powell family on the occasion of being named 
11the 2016 Illinois Farm Family of the Year and wish them 
12continued success and happiness in the future; and be it 
13further
  
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
15presented to Jimmy Powell as a symbol of our esteem and 
16respect.
