| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the Powell family on the |
| 4 | | occasion of being named the 2016 Illinois Farm Family of the |
| 5 | | Year at the Salute to Agriculture at the University of |
| 6 | | Illinois; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, When the United States entered World War II after |
| 8 | | the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, millions of young men |
| 9 | | rushed to enlist in the various branches of the military; the |
| 10 | | seven sons of George and Addie Powell, Fred, Adrian, Arthur, |
| 11 | | Earl, Everett, George, and Max, were no exception; despite the |
| 12 | | fact that the sons of farmers could be exempted from service to |
| 13 | | stay home and continue producing the crops needed to feed the |
| 14 | | nation and its military, the Powell brothers answered the call |
| 15 | | of duty and were sent to fight; all of them survived the war |
| 16 | | and returned home at various times to the family farm; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, The Powell family has lived and farmed in the |
| 18 | | Hillview area for five generations; Jimmy Powell, a |
| 19 | | fifth-generation Powell, serves as manager of the Hartwell |
| 20 | | Ranch Inc. elevator in Hillview; his father, Jim Powell, served |
| 21 | | as a pilot in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1972 and was |
| 22 | | Jimmy Powell's predecessor as manager of the Hartwell elevator; |
