HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to recognize the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Lincoln Place neighborhood in Granite City; and

WHEREAS, During the early 1900s, the Granite City area became the center of the graniteware industry; the opportunity for work attracted immigrants to the area from all over the world; these immigrants settled in the undeveloped area west of town, which was soon known as "Hungary Hollow" after the many Hungarian immigrants who settled the area; and

WHEREAS, In 1916, community leaders decided to rename the area with a name that more appropriately represented the aspirations of immigrants; "Lincoln Place" was chosen in honor of Abraham Lincoln, who had risen from humble beginnings and had achieved greatness, something which the immigrants within the community aspired to do; and

WHEREAS, Since its beginning, Lincoln Place welcomed immigrants from all over the world; with their arrival, they brought their culture while embracing all that being an American had to offer; and

WHEREAS, The stories of the immigrants who came to Lincoln Place is the story of Lincoln Place; and

WHEREAS, The culture and heritage of Lincoln Place is preserved by the Lincoln Place Heritage Association, whose mission is to encourage, facilitate, and implement preservation of the history and cultural heritage of the historic Lincoln Place neighborhood; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Place neighborhood in Granite City, and we wish them many more wonderful years; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Lincoln Place Heritage Association President Norma Asadorian.
