| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to recognize the 100th anniversary of the |
| 4 | | founding of the Lincoln Place neighborhood in Granite City; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, During the early 1900s, the Granite City area |
| 6 | | became the center of the graniteware industry; the opportunity |
| 7 | | for work attracted immigrants to the area from all over the |
| 8 | | world; these immigrants settled in the undeveloped area west of |
| 9 | | town, which was soon known as "Hungary Hollow" after the many |
| 10 | | Hungarian immigrants who settled the area; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, In 1916, community leaders decided to rename the |
| 12 | | area with a name that more appropriately represented the |
| 13 | | aspirations of immigrants; "Lincoln Place" was chosen in honor |
| 14 | | of Abraham Lincoln, who had risen from humble beginnings and |
| 15 | | had achieved greatness, something which the immigrants within |
| 16 | | the community aspired to do; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Since its beginning, Lincoln Place welcomed |
| 18 | | immigrants from all over the world; with their arrival, they |
| 19 | | brought their culture while embracing all that being an |
| 20 | | American had to offer; and
|
| 21 | | WHEREAS, The stories of the immigrants who came to Lincoln |
