HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Samuel
4Frye Burrell, who passed away on September 28, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell was born in Panola, Alabama to
6Willie and Eva Mae Burrell on September 18, 1938; he graduated
7from North Sumter High School in 1957 and joined the United
8States Army; he completed Army Warfare training at Fort
9Benning, Georgia and Army Medical School at Brooke Army Medical
10Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas; he served as an Army
11paramedic; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell left the Army in 1960 and relocated
13to Chicago, where he worked as a Chicago Transit Authority bus
14operator; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell attended DeVry University from
161967 to 1969 to study electrical engineering; he left and went
17to work for North American Phillips as an Electronic
18Technician; in 1974, he took a position with the General Motors
19Electromotive Division and resumed his studies at DeVry
20University from 1975 to 1977; he was certified as a Master
21Mechanic, Electrician, and Locomotive Engineer; and

1    WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell left General Motors in 1984, and
2joined Mayor Harold Washington's reform administration; he
3continued his education at Roosevelt University from 1987 to
41988, majoring in finance; he left the City of Chicago in 2002
5and established Fuller-Burrell Electric, an electrical
6contracting company; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell was a member of the Pan African
8Students Organization, the Black Panther Party, the NAACP, and
9the independent political movement on the west side of Chicago;
10he was elected to the Chicago City Council in 1990, where he
11served as Alderman of the 29th ward until 1999; he founded the
12United Voter Registration League which registered more than
1350,000 voters for the 1992 presidential election; he was proud
14to be called a "freedom fighter" by the president of the local
15chapter of the NAACP; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell was preceded in death by his
17parents; his brothers, James and Jesse Burrell; and his
18children, Ruwa, Linda, and Mark Burrell; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Samuel Burrell is survived by his wife of 50
20years, Rosie L. (Key); his daughters, Cheronne Michelle Mayes,
21Joye Burrell(John) Beamon, and Miesha Samantha (Gary) Turner;
22his sons, William F. Little Esq., Edward E. Burrell, and Sam
23(Erica) Burrell II; his brothers, Willie (Dorothy), Bill

1(Ellen), Charles (Barbara), and Lawrence; his sisters, Mattie
2and Gail (Timothy); many grandchildren, great-grandchildren,
3nieces, nephews, and other relatives; and a host of friends;
4therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
7mourn the passing of Samuel Burrell, and extend our sincere
8condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
9him; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the family of Samuel Burrell as an expression of
12our deepest sympathy.
