HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Catherine
4J. "Kaye" Howell, who passed away on October 5, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Catherine Howell was born on April 15, 1935 in
6Benton; her parents were Lena Pearline Reed and Lloyd Reed; she
7married Charles Lindy Barnfield at a young age; she married
8Charles E. Howell on June 28, 1974 in Benton; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Catherine Howell attended Old Baron and Hill City
10Schools before entering Benton High School; she later attended
11the Vocational Technical Institute at Southern Illinois
12University, where she completed a two-year degree program in
13commercial art; she went on earn her Bachelor of Arts in art
14education at Southern Illinois University in order to become an
15art teacher; she continued her education at Southern Illinois
16University, where she obtained her Master of Arts degree in
17higher education and a Specialist degree in higher education;
18she also attended classes at the Art Institute of Chicago and
19the Atlanta Art Institute; as an honors student, she was
20nominated for and became a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and
21Delta Kappa Gamma Honor societies; and
 
22    WHEREAS, After college, Catherine Howell became a

1traveling teacher, providing art classes to the various
2elementary schools in the district; after several years in
3Benton, she became an art teacher at Marion High School; while
4at Marion High School, she developed a vocational commercial
5art program while also teaching studio, pottery, print making,
6and other media; she was the founder of the Arts Honor Society
7program at the high school; she also taught studio classes at
8Southern Illinois University and John A. Logan College;
9following her retirement from Marion High School, she continued
10her career at John A. Logan College until she fully retired at
11the age of 73; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Catherine Howell was a partner in the advertising
13firm of Preston and Howell, Inc.; she was a member of the
14Advisory Board of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago;
15she was a higher education Curriculum Evaluator for the North
16Central Association; she was a founding member, president, and
17board member of the Little Egypt Arts Association; she was a
18founding member of the Downstate Artists Association; she was
19also a member of the Advisory Board of Mitchell Museum, a board
20member of The Hartley, and founder of the Little Egypt Writers
21Society; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Catherine Howell was one of the longest serving
23Democratic precinct committeewomen in Williamson County; she
24was also a founder of the Williamson County Democratic Women's

1Association, Honorary Chairwoman of the Williamson County
2Democratic Party, and a member of its executive committee; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Catherine Howell was an award winning artist for
4over 50 years, painting in various styles and utilizing various
5media to create her art; her art has been added to private
6collections throughout the United States and Europe; she was
7also an author and took part in many book signings and readings
8in the area; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Catherine Howell was a member of the Aldersgate
10United Methodist Church of Marion and the Homebuilders Sunday
11School Class; she was also a 50-year member of Beta Sigma Phi
12Sorority and a member of the American Association of University
13Women, the Farm Bureau, and the SIU Alumni Association; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Catherine Howell was named Art Educator of the
15Year by the State of Illinois and was a runner up for Teacher
16of the Year; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Catherine Howell was preceded in death by her
18parents; her son, Timothy Michael Barnfield; her grandson,
19Timothy Christian Barnfield; her sisters, Judith Milligan,
20Mary Helen Bennett, and Nancy Shaw; and her brother, Marvin
21"Butch" Reed; and

1    WHEREAS, Catherine Howell is survived by her husband,
2Charles E. Howell; her sons and daughter-in-law, Alan
3(Victoria) Barnfield and Robert Barnfield; her granddaughters,
4Stephanie Barnfield (Scott) Holman and Alyssa Barnfield
5Ochwat; her great-grandson, Wesley Lovan; her stepdaughters,
6Crystal (David) Culp and Carla Hudgens; her sister, Janis
7(Skip) Thomas; her brother, David (Pauletta) Goodin; her
8special family members, Dorothy Nolan and Karla Webb; her
9caregivers, Jewell Young, Peggy Forthman, Carmen Allen, Ann
10Marie Mayo, Victoria Hartley, and Curt Hartley; and many
11friends; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we, along with her family and friends, mourn the passing of
15Catherine J. "Kaye" Howell; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Catherine Howell as an expression of
18our sympathy.
