HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Nada "Hope" Jovicin of Richton Park, who passed away on July 18, 2016; and

WHEREAS, Nada Jovicin was born on February 14, 1936 in Novisad, Yugoslavia; she immigrated to the United States through Trani, Italy in 1949 and became a naturalized United States citizen on January 10, 1956; she married Milan Jovicin on December 30, 1987; and

WHEREAS, Nada Jovicin retired from A & P Grocery Store after a long career in the food industry; she was the owner and operator of Smithfield's Local Grocery Store and Butcher Shop in Evanston in the early 1990s; she was a real estate agent and a 10-year member of the North Shore Board of Realtors and the Chicago Board of Realtors; in 2000, she began working for North Street Properties; and

WHEREAS, Nada Jovicin was an active member of the National Apartment Association from 2000 to 2016; she was an active member of the Greater Lexington Apartment Association and was a member of the Board of Directors for the organization from 2004 to 2006; she was a member of the Richton Park Human Relations Commission; she was vital in organizing and hosting the Annual Neighbor to Neighbor Dinners in Richton Park and an Associate Member of the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee; and

WHEREAS, After the Haiti earthquake in 2010, Nada Jovicin worked with the "Coalition to Do Good" as a group of Richton Park residents organized to bring relief to the orphans of Jeremie, Haiti on the "Fill the Bus" project; she was an advocate for the Cat Island Sister City Project and became a member of the Sister City Committee; in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, she came to the aid of a family who lost everything in the hurricane, taking the family shopping for everything they needed to start over and even helping the father to find a new job; and

WHEREAS, Nada Jovicin was a founding member of the Red Hat Society Richton Park Chapter, also known as the Sizzlin Sistas; the Red Hatters volunteered at the Home Owners Association's Annual Resident Picnic every year and at their personal expense cooked and served more than 200 full course meals each year; in 2012, the Red Hat Society adopted an "Aunt Martha's" group home and served as mentors to young people; and

WHEREAS, Nada Jovicin was the recipient of the 2013 Citizen of the Year award in the Richton Park "I Make a Difference" Awards program; she was also designated as a 2013 "Peggy A. Montes Unsung Heroine of Cook County" for the Fifth District and was recognized and awarded a certificate for the Age Options Volunteer Awards Luncheon, which connects older adults with community-based resources and options; and

WHEREAS, Nada Jovicin was the beloved wife of Milan; the dear sister of Dmitrije Subich and family of Novi Sad; and the dearest aunt to Angie (the late Ivan) Djurin and her family; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her family and friends, mourn the passing of Nada "Hope" Jovicin; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Nada Jovicin as an expression of our sympathy.
