| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to recognize the 75th anniversary of the |
| 4 | | founding of the Chicago Vocational Career Academy; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Chicago Vocational Career Academy or Chicago |
| 6 | | Vocational High School is commonly known as CVCA or CVS; |
| 7 | | CVCA/CVS is a public four-year vocational high school located |
| 8 | | in the Avalon Park neighborhood on the south side of Chicago; |
| 9 | | and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, CVCA/CVS opened in 1941, but the outbreak of World |
| 11 | | War II caused a change in plan; the school would be a |
| 12 | | vocational school, but under the control of the United States |
| 13 | | Navy, where many mechanics would build and repair aircraft; |
| 14 | | after the war, the school was instrumental in helping returning |
| 15 | | veterans to earn their diploma; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, In February of 1946, the academic classes returned |
| 17 | | with the Navy officially "handing back the keys" to the school |
| 18 | | on April 30, 1946; 1946 also saw the admittance of the first |
| 19 | | women to the school; CVCA/CVS started offering night courses to |
| 20 | | help returning veterans; and
|
| 21 | | WHEREAS, The Navy left behind an aircraft hangar, and a |
|

| 1 | | small number of aircraft; the school continued to teach |
| 2 | | aviation maintenance until 1995; and
|
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Notable alumni of CVCA/CVS include author and |

| 20 | | RESOLVED, That we declare December 15, 2016 as CVCA/CVS Day |
