HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Representative Ed Sullivan of Mundelein on his distinguished service to his constituents and the people of the State of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan has been a member of the Illinois House since 2003 and has served this body with honor and distinction; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan was born on April 6, 1969 in Urbana, he graduated from Mundelein's Carmel Catholic High School in 1987; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from the University of Illinois in 1991; he then embarked upon a career in public service as a legislative aide to United States Congressman Phil Crane; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan was elected Fremont Township Assessor in 1993; he is currently serving his sixth term; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan was first elected to the Illinois House in 2002 and has been re-elected to six consecutive terms, proudly representing portions of his native Lake County as well as a small portion of Cook County; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan has served with distinction on the Executive, Financial Institutions, Revenue & Finance, and Elementary & Secondary Education: Charter School Policy committees during the 99th General Assembly as well as being the Republican Spokesperson on the Public Utilities Committee, Rules Committee, and the Special Committee on Public Private Partnerships; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan has served his caucus ably as an Assistant Republican Leader since 2014; and

WHEREAS, One of Representative Sullivan's landmark legislative achievements was the passage of the Illinois Anti-Gang initiative in 2009, establishing a unique pilot program to crack down on local gang activity through innovative use of the internet; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan played an instrumental role as the lead Republican negotiator and Chief Co-Sponsor of the Illinois concealed carry law in 2013, a historic achievement to strengthen and protect Second Amendment rights in the State; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan demonstrated tremendous courage in being one of only three Republican legislators in the House of Representatives to support and speak boldly on behalf of The Illinois Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act of 2013, which finally brought marriage equality to the State of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan will be long remembered and celebrated for his role as co-founder of the bipartisan "Sullivan Caucus", an annual gathering of Statehouse officials, staff, policy advocates and friends which he has hosted each year along with former State Senator Dave Sullivan (R-Park Ridge) and retiring State Senator John Sullivan (D-Rushville); and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan has received numerous honors and awards during his legislative career, including being named by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police as the Public Official of the Year; recipient of the Acorn Award from the Nature Conservancy; the Illinois Farm Bureau Activator Award for being a Friend of Agriculture; he was named "Lung Health Champion from the Illinois Respiratory Health Association; Illinois Bankers Association "Outstanding Legislator", as well as multiple recognitions by the National Federation of Independent Businesses/Illinois as a "Guardian of Small Business", and the Illinois Chamber of Commerce as a "Champion of Free Enterprise"; he also received the Illinois Association of Park Districts Outstanding Legislator of the Year Award; and

WHEREAS, During his 14-year career as a member of the Illinois General Assembly, Representative Sullivan distinguished himself as a legislator respected on both sides of the aisle for his thoughtfulness, knowledge, commitment to his constituents and public service to the people of the State of Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan is very proud of his wife, Trish, a family nurse practitioner; and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan is the proud and loving father of daughter, Kaileigh, and son, Edwin (Finn); and

WHEREAS, Representative Sullivan has made innumerable contributions to the public good through his extensive civic and volunteer involvement with the GLMV and Lake Zurich Chambers of Commerce, the Liberty Prairie Foundation, Friends of Mundelein Parks, and the Knights of Columbus; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Representative Sullivan on a job well done in the General Assembly and wish him the best in all his future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Representative Sullivan and his family as an expression of our esteem and respect for our colleague and friend.
