| 2 | | WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General |
| 3 | | Assembly pays honor and respect to the
families of those who |
| 4 | | have perished overseas while serving our country; and

| 5 | | WHEREAS, The Gold Star is awarded by the
United States |
| 6 | | Department of Defense to the immediate family of a fallen |
| 7 | | service member; the Gold Star has appeared on flags dating as |
| 8 | | far back as World War I, which families would hang in their |
| 9 | | windows to indicate that a loved one had been killed overseas; |
| 10 | | and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, The United States began observing Gold Star |
| 12 | | Mothers Day on the last Sunday of
September in 1936; the Gold |
| 13 | | Star Wives was formed prior to the end of World War II; the |
| 14 | | Gold
Star Lapel Button was established in August of 1947; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, The nation recognizes the sacrifice that Gold Star |
| 16 | | family members make when a loved one dies in service to the |
| 17 | | nation; and |
| 18 | | WHEREAS, The
strength of the United States Army is its |
| 19 | | soldiers and the strength of the soldiers are their families; |
| 20 | | the Army
recognizes that no one has given more for the nation |
| 21 | | than the families of the fallen; therefore, be it
