SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, A State constitutional amendment initiative effort is underway to place an Independent Redistricting Commission constitutional amendment for the State constitution on the ballot for the voters in this State to consider adopting; and

WHEREAS, This proposed constitutional amendment would create an independent commission to carry out the reapportionment and redistricting of State legislative districts after each federal census; and

WHEREAS, From the perspective of the citizens of this State, there are significant advantages in using an independent commission to reapportion and redistrict legislative districts; among them, the removal or minimization of political considerations from the redistricting process, bringing fairness and objectivity to the process, and, in the end, improving the representation of the citizens of this State through legislative districts which are more representative of the district; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that if the voters adopt the Independent Redistricting Commission constitutional amendment, we urge the General Assembly to adopt the same process for the redistricting of the federal congressional districts in this State; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to the President of the Illinois Senate, the Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, the Minority Leader of the Illinois Senate, and the Minority Leader of the Illinois House of Representatives.
